SEBMFA SCALE DAY 2013

Report from Keith Miller

Following the pattern over recent years, the 2013 South East Area Scale Day was held at the excellent Hastings club Middlebridge site on Sunday, July 28th. The night before the event the weather had been horrendous with torrential rain causing damage to tents and other property. However, on the day it was bright and sunny but with a strong wind which got more gusty as the day progressed.

One of the requirements of the Towner Trophy competition held during the day was that models must fly in order to qualify for scale judging and understandably many flyers were loath to risk their beautiful models in the high wind. However, this did not deter Don Coe who was one of the first to fly. His magnificent scale 1912 Blackburn Monoplane coped well in the wind with its wing warping control and turned out to be the first place winner.

Greg Veasey flying his well known scale Zero and Phil Creeman with his DH82A Tiger Moth also braved the elements and placed second and third respectively.

Most people will have heard of the recent passing of Colin Hammond, who had been a leading light in the Hastings club for many years and likewise a Chief Examiner for the South East Area. During the lunch break, 4 of Colin's large scale models were flown in his memory and it was only a pity that his well known 18 feet span Lancaster was away in Europe and unavailable to fly with the others.

Also during the day, various demonstration flights of gas turbine powered models were carried out by Mike Donnelly, Steve Ogden and Steve Brett.

We are most grateful to the Hastings club for hosting this event once again.
